Buying fuel in Indonesia: what to know
- Official stations (SPBU) of Pertamina, Shell, BP and Vivo show the price on the pump. Pertamina’s price is the same at every one of its stations in a province.
- Check the pump starts at zero. Attendants often say “mulai dari nol” (starting from zero) and point at the display before filling.
- Say the amount or the fuel, then check the display when they finish and count your change.
- Roadside sellers (small “Pertamini” pumps and bottled fuel) set their own price. Ask the price, and how much a bottle holds, before they pour.
- Which fuel? Rental scooters usually take Pertalite (RON 90) or Pertamax (RON 92). Ask your rental which one yours should get.
- Subsidised fuel (Pertalite, Biosolar): for some vehicles stations may ask for a MyPertamina QR code. The rules change; follow the attendant’s instructions (details in Indonesian).
